History & Introduction
The biomedical engineering (BME) had been cultivated in Thailand for 25 years. At first it was began as device maintenance and calibration activities and confined to some units in the university hospitals due to personal interest. After that there were some electrical engineers paid interest in studying and making medical devices used in intensive care unit monitoring such as ECG (electrocardiography) In 1993 the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC), the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) had funded the first BME research project to Prince of Songkla University (PSU) to build the first Assisted Swallowing Device. Since then BME had taken a first step of establishment and getting more and more interest from other universities through out the country. In October 2000, NSTDA and PSU had signed and agreement to setup the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at PSU as a core and network institute in order to expedite the BME development in Thailand .In September 2004, the Institute of Biomedical Engineering had been supported by Ministry of University Affairs (MUA) for higher competitive performance in biomedical engineering. In October 2004, the Institute of Biomedical Engineering had signed MOU with University of California , San Diego for exchanging human resources and research collaborations in order to develop new academia and researchers in next era. In 2005, The Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering had launched at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering . We aim to produce excellent students who will be key persons in biomedical engineering.Furthermore, we also encourage collaborative projects between the government and/or corporate enterprises in order to make technology transfer and strengthen the biomedical engineering manufacturing industry.
